How We Survive
For “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal, joining the Navy fresh out of college was a defining chapter in his life. It was the 1980s; the Cold War and the Soviet Union was the greatest threat. Fast-forward through 40 years — and one career change — and the threat looks different. Climate change has no face or flag, but it will fundamentally change the way the U.S. military trains and fights. It already has. “How We Survive” is an award-winning podcast from Marketplace about the messy business of climate solutions. In our sixth season, Kai Ryssdal travels to far corners of the world to shine a light on how the institution that shaped him could shape our climate future. From a small Arctic village to a remote island in the Pacific, we’ll take you to the front lines of the fight against the crisis.

…sat in that 50-degree tank for 666 minutes. While draining a case of cheap whiskey. Got out. Flipped the bird at pictures of Obama and Clinton. Posed in a Musk-Bannon salute while facing Russia. And finished with 34-time felon Duh Donalds on three bottle-blond, phony topped social media influencers. While singing Duh Donald Dyed Dixie Banner.

Over the years we have grown to feel the Kai is part of our family Over the several series of podcasts, he manages to discover the human side of business, economics, and, of course, serious topics like climate change. We trust Kai, and you should too listen to everything he does.
Thoughtful and alarming

Kai does an amazing job explaining complex topics in laymans terms. Climate change and its related risks to our way of life are overwhelming, yet Kai is able to look them calmly in the eye, wrestle their daunting threats to the ground so that we can all have some hope of understanding and overcoming them.Thank you !
Worth Your Time (and Fun!)

I really enjoyed this series. It doesn’t offer answers so much as explain the problems that are and will continue to be important in so many different ways. Kai is a delightful and informative host, and his (and the show’s) perspective is really great. Recommend for anyone who cares about climate, national security, or just generally being informed on important issues of the day.
What happened to latest season?

Coverage of how the military is fighting climate change has disappeared from the episode archives. What gives? I’m going to be very disappointed if this is due to the new administration. Grow a backbone.

Interesting subject matter focusing on the challenges we will see as we transition to renewable energy. I tend to be in the middle of the climate change narrative - not believing that the earth is on the verge of collapse nor believing that we can do whatever we want to the earth without consequences. If you tend to fall on either extreme camp, this podcast might be a turn off for you. Molly does an excellent job explaining the many aspects of the challenges an electric future will hold. For the most part, she does a good job on keeping a level head with the science of climate change without pushing too far into a government overreach agenda or fear mongering. However, episode 6 nearly turned me off from the podcast altogether - as the guest might be one of the most egotistical climate alarmist I’ve ever heard. His rants about establishing a “carbon based currency” and destroying pipelines proved how out of touch with reality he is (which shouldn’t be surprising coming from a fiction author with no scientific authority). Needless to say this episode nearly derailed the podcast as a whole for me. That being said, the rest of the episodes were solid and insightful. The race for batteries is much more complex than I initially thought, and I learned a lot as I made my way through the podcast. Hope to hear more from Molly in future seasons. Edit: The initial review was for season 1. The following seasons have each been enjoyable learning experiences. Each season (minus this past one) still has an episode that focuses on fictionalized scenarios by people with no scientific authority. While this might appeal to a radical climate alarmist, it has to no real bearing on reality, and detracts from the podcast as a whole.
Great Job Ky

If you’ve listened to Marketplace, you are familiar with this quality journalism. Lu and team have taken that excellent workmanship and applied it to a very serious topic from a unique perspective. Well done, highly recommend. This should be required listening for anyone living on the planet.
What a great find!

I’m a regular listener of Marketplace. I enjoy Kai’s approach to current events in the business world. But I was surprised to hear a very different side of him when I tuned into NPR on a short drive around town. Here’s this business nerd talking about climate change threats to national security with a crazy vignette about first being subjected to incredibly dangerous high temperatures followed shortly thereafter to an ice bath, all the while having to perform challenging mental tasks. I HAD to find this pod cast! Along the way I learned about his past in the Navy (including landing jets on carriers and working at the Pentagon). He reports on how climate change is already presenting problems and what various parts of the military are doing to deal with it. This is one of those driveway experiences; that is, you park the car but stay in it to finish the episode. That’s a slight exaggeration because it’s always available here. Thanks Kai and crew for this!
Enlightening unbiased and helpful

The entire season explores new areas in interesting ways. The interviews with people involved, both in and out of the military make the content real in an emotional way. I am grateful to know that so many smart and dedicated people in our military are tackling climate change issues in interesting ways. Thank you Kai and staff for your work and dedication to shedding light on topics that are important to everyone. I recommend this to anyone (even climate change skeptics).
